Candle Care

On receiving your order, we advise the following steps when displaying and storing your candle.

  • Keep in a cool dry place
  • DO NOT place in direct sunlight
  • DO NOT place under or near harsh artificial light e.g. fluorescent light
  • Candles can sweat with temperature fluctuations. Particularly in hot climates. Please gently wipe/pat dry with a paper towel
  • Sweating can also occur during freight. On receiving your order if you notice sweating please follow the above tip. Then light your candle and enjoy
None of the above affects the performance of your candles.

LIGHTING AND USAGE

To get the most from your candle please read and follow the following tips below.

  • Do not trim our candle wicks prior to first burn. Wicks are pre-trimmed
  • Place candle on a stable heat-resistant surface
  • To prevent tunneling burn your candle until wax melts across at least 95% of the surface of the vessel or a maximum of 4 hours.
  • To preserve fragrance do not burn candle for more than 5 hours at a time and once wax has a full melt pool you should extinguish, allow to cool and trim wick to 5mm. Your candle is now ready to relight
  • Keep wax pool clear of any wick trimming and debris. DO not trim wick until wax has cooled and reset
  • Avoid drafts as they will decrease burn time, cause uneven burning, smoking and diminished scent throw
  • If flame becomes too high, smoking or excessive flickering, extinguish, allow to cool, trim wick and relight. Check candle is not in a draft
  • If candle has been smoking and leaves soot on the jar, or settles in wax, extinguish, allow to cool and reset trim wick and wipe with a paper towel or tissue prior to relighting
  • Keep wicks centred, standing upright. Do not allow flame to touch the side of the glass vessel. If this happens extinguish flame immediately.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.

All candles, regardless of what wax is used, will smoke if not in the ideal environment. This is a chemical reaction and is unavoidable. Single wick candles in containers are prone to this. We advise the following steps to keep smoking to a minimum.

  • Keep out of any drafts
  • Do not let your candle burn for too long. Maximum five hours
  • Always trim prior to relighting, to 5mm
  • Never blow a candle out. Use a wick dipper or skewer to extinguish flame. We highly recommend this as it will eliminate almost all after burn smoke plume
  • To extuinguish your candle always turn the wick into the wax minimising smoke. Dip wick into wax to extinguish, then place upright again, centre and allow to reset, then trim. A skewer also works well in place of a wick dipper.

COMMON QUESTIONS

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO GET A FULL MELT POOL?

All wax has what is termed a memory. This memory must be set at the first burn to prevent the candle from ‘tunneling’, forming a tunnel through the centre much like a pillar candle.
Candles generally meet a full melt pool within 4-5 hours burn time, some candles may do so in less .

WHY SHOULD I TRIM MY WICK?

A long untrimmed wick will cause your candle to burn too quickly, create smoking and cause the wick to curl back into the wax and get buried making it hard to relight.  You can also find you may get whats called a mushroom head , on the wick that will cause extreme smoking. Wicks should be kept to 5mm.

Do not over trim your wick or you may not be able to relight it.

MY CANDLE LOOKS LIKE IT’S NOT ADHERING TO THE GLASS?

Wax is a natural product and responds to fluctuations in temperature, often wax will pull away from the glass once it has set due to these fluctuations. This is normal and does not affect the performance of your candle.

WHY ARE THERE CLEAR DROPLETS ON TOP OF MY CANDLE?

  • There has been a change in temperature and the candle has begun to sweat (common in candles in hot regions and candles that have been freighted)
  • The candle has been over scented and the fragrance is leaching out. Wax can only hold so much fragrance. This will look more like a yellow stain sitting on top of the candle; heat can also cause fragrance to leach.

Neither of the above will affect your candles performance and are more likely to occur in hot climates. We advise that you pat dry the top with a paper towel then light your candle.

NOT ALL MY CANDLES LOOK THE SAME?

Unlike commercial candles that are mass produced, each candle is hand poured individually. Small anomalies will occur from one to the other as they do not come off a production line. Soy wax can also set differently to paraffin candles, some may have a slight uneven texture when reset. Once you relight your candle the molten wax will fill the unevenness until the next reset.
